The general goal of the project is to effectively detect and manage forest fires in the cross-border area through appropriate ICT tools in order to increase preparedness and exchange practices between the two countries. The development and implementation of ICT systems for effective early detection of forest fires, with increased accuracy, reduced false alarm rates and the ability to work 24/7 will demonstrate the potential of such innovative technology to contribute to early warning of the risk of disasters from forest fires.
The system will contribute to the mitigation and management of post-fire effects resulting in fire spread, by providing accurate information on the dispersion of smoke from wildfires. Maps will also be developed based on a common methodology to identify areas where ICT systems for the early detection of forest fires could be deployed, in order to increase and disseminate a common culture of risk resilience, the project will enable the development of cross-border network, sharing scientific knowledge and best practices for effective forest fire prevention and management.
Main activities of the project:
- Procurement of four efficient firefighting vehicles for forest fire protection;
- A common transboundary scheme for the identification of risk values and a common methodology for forest fire inventory and mapping;
- Development of an ICT system for early detection and warning of forest fires in the cross-border region;
- Fire early warning trainings;
- Cross-Border Region Fire Management Education Network;
- Implementation of Urban User Interface (WUI) tools and computer training to use the wildfire system;
- Preparation of guidelines for assessing the risk of forest fires in the cross-border area;
- Preparation of joint protocols for transboundary fire management;
- Development of a cross-border Action Plan for risk mitigation;
