Joint actions to protect and improve public health in the cross-border area

Short description of the project

The overall objective of the IpA Shield project is to improve the effectiveness of primary and preventive health services in the cross-border area by upgrading existing medical services and equipment and installing new ones, with an emphasis on diabetes prevention.
The cross-border area is characterized by significant regional disparities and the existence of strong metropolitan areas. In addition, a large part of the population is rural and belongs to vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. The project aims to increase the number of citizens covered by improved health services and to reduce the incidence of Diabetes, which is increasing significantly, especially among children.

Results

The main results under the IPA SHIELD II project consist of:

  • Medical equipment of great importance for 2 general hospitals and 4 health centers in the cross-border area and more specifically: (i) General Hospital Kilkis, (ii) Public Health Institution: General Hospital – Gevgelija, (iii) Health Centers of Gumenisa, Drosato, Polikastro and Valandovo
  • Medical equipment for the implementation of control days, including special blood sugar measuring sticks and blood sugar measuring devices to be used in the 6 health institutions listed above/ Implementation of an average of 20,000 diabetes examinations targeting children and the elderly in total/
  • 1 Diabetes Center will be established and operated in the General Hospital Gevgelija with a focus on disease prevention and informing the local population.
  • 4 parent training programs will be organized in Kilkis and Goumenissa with a focus on first aid for children, where 80 parents will be trained
  • Campaign focused on diabetes and preventive healthcare (including a 2-minute TV spot on diabetes – information on scheduled screening days in Greece)
